After struggling at home for more than a month, the Arizona Diamondbacks are finally playing well at Chase Field.
The
Diamondbacks can move above .500 there for the first time in almost two
months with a seventh consecutive home victory Tuesday night against
the Seattle Mariners.
Arizona (33-34) went 21 straight innings
without a run before scoring three times in the first of Monday's 7-1
win over Seattle. Second baseman Aaron Hill became the fifth player in
Diamondbacks history to hit for the cycle and Justin Upton drove in two
runs.
"It was nice for us to jump out early and nice to get a
win," said Hill, the first Arizona player to hit for the cycle since
Kelly Johnson on July 23, 2010.
The Diamondbacks have won nine of
11 at Chase Field following a stretch there where they dropped 14 of 17.
With a 16-16 record in the desert, Arizona has a chance to surpass the
.500 mark at home for the first time since it was 6-5 on April 23.
"They've
got a good attitude," said manager Kirk Gibson, whose team is in the
midst of its longest home winning streak since a 15-game run Aug.
9-Sept. 10. "There a lot of good things happening."
Hill has
certainly been good, batting .575 (23 for 40) with 11 extra-base hits
and nine RBIs during an 11-game home hitting streak. The former Blue Jay
has hit .375 with two homers in his last six games versus Seattle.
"A
good player, I have seen it for a long time," Mariners manager Eric
Wedge said. "If you make a mistake, he is going to make you pay for it."
Batting .375 (9 for 24) in his last six games, Upton is 6 for 14 with five RBIs in four career contests against the Mariners.
After
Wade Miley threw seven solid innings, Daniel Hudson (3-1, 5.67 ERA)
hopes for a second straight strong outing for the Diamondbacks on
Tuesday. The right-hander allowed six runs in 1 2-3 innings of a 9-8 win
over Oakland on June 8, then bounced back to give up three in seven
innings of an 11-3 victory at Texas on Thursday.
"Something can
click and your body and your mind, muscle-memory or something like that,
you get back to basics," Hudson told the Diamondbacks' official
website. "Get momentum, especially getting a lot of guys in a row out,
just get in a rhythm. Mechanics are the same every single time, that's
what we strive for."
In his only appearance versus Seattle (29-40)
on July 19, 2010, Hudson gave up a run in 6 2-3 innings of a 6-1
victory while with the Chicago White Sox.
Seattle's Ichiro Suzuki
is 0 for 3 against Hudson, but will be back in the lineup after getting
Monday night off. One hit shy of 2,500 for his career, Suzuki is 1 for
12 in his last three games.
Mariners rookie Erasmo Ramirez (0-1,
4.50) hopes for a better performance than in his first major league
start Thursday, when he allowed six runs in five innings of a 6-2 loss
to San Diego.
"He has that out of the way," Wedge told the Mariners' official website. "It's something to work off of now."
Casper
Wells, who had two hits with an RBI on Monday, is 8 for 16 in five
games since being recalled by the Mariners on Wednesday.
