The Chicago Fire beat the New York Red Bulls with 3-1 on June 17 at Toyota Park. After waiting two weeks for the Fire to return to action, fans finally received relief from the losing streak. Although I think the night should have ended with 4-1, and MLS needs to continue to improve the refereeing, this was still a great game for Chicago.
Goals
The Chicago Fire's Patrick Nyarko started the night on a positive note with an early goal. Although the referee did not allow Dominic Oduro's goal, the team had two more goals from Gonzalo Segares and Chris Rolfe. I think the Fire's ability to start the game strong and show an ongoing effort to score is a vast improvement over earlier matches. Instead of playing catch up and waiting for the second half to come alive, Chicago was taking the lead.
The Referee's Mistake
The referee made the decision to disallow Dominic Oduro's goal in the 65th minute of the game. It was obvious that his shot went past the goal line for fans. However, Baldomero Toledo still did not allow the goal. I think this is a perfect example of the ongoing referee problems that MLS keeps promising to fix. The problem may be eliminated if goal-line technology finally comes to Major League Soccer. Meanwhile, fans and players have to contend with these types of bad calls.
The Return of Chris Rolfe
The June 17 game also featured the return of Chris Rolfe. The Chicago Fire forward was out with an ankle injury but was finally able to join the starting lineup. Head coach Frank Klopas made the right decision to substitute Sebastian Grazzini with Chris Rolfe in the 61st minute. Rolfe immediately scored a goal that helped the team solidify the win over the New York Red Bulls. It was wonderful to finally see Chris Rolfe back on the field.
The Next Game for the Fire
The Chicago Fire will not have a long break before the next game. They will face the Columbus Crew on June 23 at Toyota Park and hopefully start a winning streak.
